Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa attended an event on 13 December to receive a consignment of Chinese military equipment that included new armoured vehicles.

“This is a result of the unapparelled strategic partnership that exists between Zimbabwe and China,” Mnangagwa posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account. “I express gratitude to China for their generosity and our ongoing relationship.”

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) described the consignment as a donation that took place at the mechanised brigade base in Inkomo, northwest of Harare.

It released photographs showing at least eight Norinco WMA301 6×6 self-propelled guns, numerous WZ551 6×6 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) in at least three configurations, and trucks.

Some of the WZ551s had the one-person turret with a 30 mm cannon, which is widely used in Africa, while others had an older type of turret with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.

The OPC said the equipment also included ambulances, water purifiers, patrol boats, minibuses, sniper rifles, machine guns, and pistols.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has confirmed the sale of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters to Nigeria.

A $7.7-million contract was also awarded to Northrop Grumman in December to provide 32 mission computers for the Bell helicopters. The contract is expected to be completed in June 2024.

Following the contract award, the US State Department stated in January that Nigeria had paid the first installment.

Leonardo has signed a deal to deliver 24 M-346 transonic jets to the Nigerian Air Force.

The contract will see the company deliver the aircraft in tranches of six, with the first batch expected to arrive by the end of 2024.

The M-346 will be integrated as an advanced pilot training capability, as well as a multi-role aircraft for close air support, air interdiction, and tactical reconnaissance.

Leonardo will provide maintenance support for the fleet for a minimum of 25 years. The group will also actively coordinate with the force in the program’s pilot and engineer training efforts.
