German and British engineers conduct river crossing exercises with the M3 Amphibious Rig at Minden, Germany, 2019. The exercise had the added benefit of demonstrating tactical options to an observing contingent of international staff officers in training. The M3 vehicle is capable of carrying vehicles as heavy as a main battle tank. If linked together, as few as 8 vehicles are capable of bridging a river 100 metres in width in as little as 30 minutes.
The participating British troops from 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron, 75 Engineer Regiment, form the last major British unit to remain in Germany following the perennial withdrawal of the British forces. The squadron with its 10 amphibious rigs is slated to become 5th Company (Amphibious) of the then-binational Armoured Engineer Battalion 130, 9th Armoured Brigade of the German Army's 1st Armoured Division with a projected total of 40 amphibious rigs.
