The Battle of Saipan, 1944. Native islanders had been hiding to escape the fighting between US and Japanese forces. The sole living person among the hundreds of corpses in one cave was this baby who almost smothered before soldiers found him and rushed him to hospital.
Marines followed tanks against the last Japanese defenders with machine gunners providing cover. Three men alongside the photographer were hit just before he took the picture. The Battle of Saipan, 1944
February 14, 1945, near Aboncourt, France, Sergeant Elvin Harley (Kalamazoo, Michigan) being kissed by a little French girl. This proud member of the 3rd Armored Division survived the rest of the war and returned to Michigan.
