SS Khedive Ismail, 12 February 1944 was sunk due to enemy action, resulting in the single worst loss of servicewomen: 17 WRNS, 53 nursing sisters and their matron, as well as nine members of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry.
HMS Assegai 01 October 1942 to 15 May 1944 located at Wentworth Durban, South Africa was a central drafting pool, transit camp and central training Establishment.

She was medical invalided out of the WRNS 14 April 1944 and died 09 May 1944 age 24 years of Pulmonary miliary tuberculosis at Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital, Southport, Lancashire. At rest in Maeshyfryd Burial Board Cemetery, Holyhead, Anglesey.

The following Wrens, Ashburner and Batchelor were passengers in an Albacore I, flown by Chief Petty Officer Air Mechanic NZ3170 Frederick Ernest Andrews, R.N.Z.N., of F.A.A. HMS Merlin which spun into the ground during a test flight, 09 June 1944 near Fordell Castle. 2 miles East of Dunfermline, Fife.
Both were laid to rest beside each other with full military honours at Douglas Bank Cemetery, Dunfermline, Fifeshire.

JOAN MARGARET ASHBURNER. Leading Wren 45374, at Fleet Air Arm HMS Merlin. on Radar Duty.
Born 02 February 1924 at Johannesburg, South Africa to George Bankes and Ada Margaret Ashburner of Hayes, Bromley, Kent.
She arrived in England with her mother, Ada M and siblings, disembarking at Southampton 12 June 1933. Their proposed address was 13 Fortis Avenue, Fortis Green, London
She was killed in a plane crash age 20 years at Fordell Estate, Donibristle Fife 09 June 1944. She was laid to rest with full military honours in Douglas Bank Cemetery, Dunfermline, Fifeshire.

The following extract is taken from the Croydon Time and Surrey County Mail dated Saturday June 24 1944.
Two Leading Wren of Fleet Air Arm who volunteered for service on Trafalgar Day 1942 worked side by side for two years on active service. On Friday it was announced that they had been killed together in a air crash.
They were Leading Wren Margaret (Peggy) Elsie Clair Batchelor daughter of Mr and Mrs T.C.N. Batchelor of Crest Road, South Croydon and Leading Wren Joan Margaret Ashburner daughter of Mr and Mrs G>B> Ashburner of Cecil Way, Hayes Kent
Aged 20 Miss Batchelor was chosen for highly specialised radio work at a Naval Air Station and since this appointment last year, had made over 130 flights in various types of aircraft. She was educated at St Anne’s College, Sanderstead and at St. George College London. Later joined the B.B.C., as secretary to a leading producer in the Schools Department. She would have celebrated her 21st birthday on July 31st this year.
Her funeral in Scotland was attended with Naval honours before a full parade of her station personnel. A column of Wrens carried over 60 wreaths and wreaths were also received from relatives, the B.B.C. and the Free French and friends.

The following two wrens killed by the explosion from a V.1. ("Vengeance Weapon 1") flying bomb 18 June 1944 while in the Guards Chapel, Wellington Barracks, London.

Aircraft accident. 07 July 1944
On the 07 July 1944 the following two wrens, along with Sub-Lieutenant, Pilot, Geoffrey Pickles. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, all from RNAS HMS Kestrel were flying in a Percival Proctor, P6019 when it crashed at White Hill Farm, Overton, Hampshire, both perished at the scene, due to a failure of the starboard wing.

Born 28 August 1923 to Horace and Dora Meynell, of Wibsey, Bradford.
1939 with her parents at 37 Briarwood Drive, Bradford, (West Riding) Yorkshire.
Died 07 July 1944 age 20 years.
Her funeral was held at Bradford Crematorium, Yorkshire.

Aircraft accident 23 July 1944 at Perranporth, Cornwall

THELMA DAPHNE JACKSON, nee Stewart. 3rd Officer WRN of Fleet Air Arm 816 Sqn HMS Jackdaw based at St Merryn, Cornwall
Born 07 May 1920 at the Cottage, Monkstown Rathdown, County Dublin to Charles Trench and Norah Eileen Trench Stewart, nee Weatherill of Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland
18 August 1936 she and her mother disembarked at London Port off M V Shropshire after arriving from Marseilles. Their forward address was Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Ireland on this date she was not married.
Wife of Sub-Lieut. (A) Arthur Myles Jackson, R.N.V.R.
Died as the result of flying accident at sea 23 July 1944 age 24 years.
She is commemorated on Bay 05, panel 07 at Lee-on-Solent Memorial, Hampshire.
She was a passenger along with her husband, Ty/Sub Lieutenant (A) Arthur Myles Jackson RNVR and Pilot, Sub Lieutenant (A) Eric Fretwell RNVR in a Swordfish torpedo bomber which took off from Perranporth Cornwall 23 July 1944. During the flight the pilot did a dive bombing practice when at 1,500 feet exploded 18 Miles West of Perranporth, Cornwall and crashed into the sea. The aircraft and occupants were never found.

Died 11 September 1944 age 19 years of laceration of the brain due to a fractured skull as the result of a motor accident at Wellow, nr Romsey Hampshire. At rest in Hollybrook Cemetery, Southampton, Hampshire.

Died 15 September 1944 age 21 years of aplastic anaemia at Old Windsor Emergency Hospital, Crimp Hill, Old Windsor, Berkshire.

Only daughter of Mrs and Mrs Monks of Wheatley Lane reported to have died 26th October in a Scottish General Hospital, Cario. Serving in the Fleet Mail Office, Cairo. Ldg Wren Monks joined the Service about three years ago and as a girl attended Whitefield Council School, Nelson. She had been stationed in Cairo 18 months and was expected home shortly. She joined the Women’s Land Army at the age of 18 and later enlisted in the W.R.N.S.
