MADELEINE VICTORINE BAYARD. 1st Officer WRNS on HMS Fidelity formerly French Merchant Ship Le Rhin
Served as Madeline BARCLAY on the French merchant vessel Le Rhin. After the fall of France, in 1940, the ship escaped to Britain and was accepted for service with SOE, re-commissioned as HMS Fidelity, with its French crew inducted into the Royal Navy.
Daughter in 1911 of Adele Suzanne Bayard, father unknown of Santeny, France.

The following two received multiple injuries and were killed as the result of being hit by a train during Black-Out at Barry Railway Station., South Wales.

The following extract is taken from an entry of The Daily Mail dated Tuesday 16 February 1943.
Hull Wren killed by train.
WREN, Joan Huzzey with another WREN was waiting for the night train from Barry to Cardiff. It is assumed that they hurried out of the waiting room on the darkened platform (black-out in operation) and seeing a train at the down platform stepped forward and were killed by an incoming train. No one had seen them or heard screams and it was not until the next morning that the bodies were found. They were given a Naval funeral.

Extract. At dawn on Friday a workman at Barry Railway Station found the bodies of Leading Wren Marion Grace Melhuish of 10 Talbot Street, Cardiff and Wren Joan Mary Florence Huzzey of Aubrey Avenue, Cardiff lying between the four foot way. They were known to be catching the 10.45 pm train to Cardiff last night hurried through the waiting room on the platform on seeing a train and thinking it was for Cardiff and hurried towards it on the down platform and as they fell on to the four-foot way their train must have come in and struck them

Died 07 February 1943 age 22 years of cardiac failure due to acute oedema of colitis. Seq to peritonsillar abscess due to strep collical tonsilitis in Wrens Quarters, HMS Badger, Harwich, Essex.

ANNIE CRAWFORD HOSIE. Wren Leading Cook (Ty) R/8776 WRNS on HMS Jackdaw.
Born 03 March 1909 at Banff, Banffshire to William and Helen Hosie, of Banff.
Died 11 February 1943 age 33 at Emergency Medical Service (E.M.S.) Cameron Hospital, Windygates, Buckhaven Scotland of fracture to the base of her skull sustained in a motor accident. At rest in Banff Cemetery, Banffshire.

On the 15 February 1943, ten seamen, Royal Navy and one Wren WRNS all died in an aircraft accident at Scarlett Point, Isle on Man

CATHERINE PEEBLES SMITH. Wren R/40183 WRNS on HMS Pyramus.
Born 18 May 1922 at Strathyrum, Fife, Scotland to Robert and of Mary Smith nee Mackie, of Coupar.
She was a passenger along with 13 naval passengers and four FAA crew from Fleet Air Arm and other non FAA on board a Hadley Page Harrow K6946 from 782 Squadron R.N. Air Station Donbristle It 15 February 1943, she was age 20 years. At rest in Cupar New Cemetery, Fifshire.

Aircraft was on its way to Lossiemouth with 14 passengers and crew of four. En route, aircraft went out of control and crashed in the Moray Firth, a few yards from shore. No trace of the aircraft nor the crew was found.

MARY JANE MARION MAKER. Wren 7037 WRNS on HMS Heron.
Born at 08-45 am at 15 Glendermott Road, Waterside, County Londonderry 15 November 1921 to James and Julia Maker, nee Walker. Her father was a railway porter.
1940 her parents were residing 15Glendermott Road, Waterside County Londonderry.
Died 17 March 1943 age 22 years. No cause of death found.

The following eight Wrens from HMS Midge were all in a Wrens hostel in Great Yarmouth when it was hit by a bomb during an air raid by German bombers 18 March 1943.

Died 5 April 1943 age 20. of Streptococcal Meningitis following Mastoiditis at East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital, Ipswich, Suffolk.

On the 12 May 1943, 24 German Focke-Wulf FW 190 (nickname “Shrike” )
fighter carried out low level dusk raids at Lowestoft which caused major damage and 32 deaths 02 of which were WRNS. The fighters were carrying one belly mounted 1000lb.

Royal Navy Lorry Crash.
On the evening of Monday 31 May 1943 a party of 18 personnel from HMS Blackcap were returning to base in a Royal Navy Lorry after being at a local dance. The lorry went off the road and overturned at Wrights Green, Appleton, near their base. Six were killed and others although injured survived

Born 04 September 1914. Died 31 May 1943.
At rest in St Cross Churchyard, Appleton Thorn, Cheshire.
Following extract credited to aircrewremembered.
She was one of six who were killed in the accident 31 May 1943. It became known that she had no family and as a result, personnel from the base and many local residents attended her funeral in such number that the church could not accommodate them and her funeral service had to be held at the local War Memorial. She was laid to rest with Full Military Honours at St Cross, Appleton Thorne.

Born 10 May 1903.
Wife of James T. Enright, of Sea Girt.
On the 31 May 1943 age 40 years she was killed when knocked from her bicycle by a bus in the dimmed-out area near the ocean at Sea Girt New Jersey U.S.A.

ELINORA ELINORA HARE. Leading Wren N/45376 on HMS Kestrel.
Born 15 October 1924 at South Shields, County Durham to Captain (Merchant Navy) William and Beatrice Ellen Hare, of Whitley Bay.
She died 31 December 1943 age 19 years of multiple injuries received from an army lorry accident while she another wren and two brothers, both marines were waiting for a bus on the Sutton Scotney Road, near Royal Naval Station, Worthy Down, Winchester. She and the brothers died in Winchester Hospital
The other Wren was also injured and taken to hospital. Her condition was not regarded as serious.

The following extracted from a news paper cutting Evening Chronicle.
Leading Wren Hare who had just returned from Christmas leave had been in Service nearly two years, previously being employed as a shorthand typist in Newcastle. A native of South Shields, she lived in Buenos Aires until the age of 15 when she became a pupil at Whitley and Monkseaton High School.

Returning from leave on New year’s Eve Leading Wren Elnora Hare (19) daughter of Captain William Hare O.B.E. and Mre Hare of King’s Drive, Whitley Bay was involved in an accident with and army lorry and received injuries from which she died shortly afterwards in Winchester Hospital.
Two marines (brothers) beside Miss Hare were killed in the accident.
They were in a queue waiting for a bus near a camp when an American Army lorry appeared. Several persons were injured.
At the inquest at a naval camp in Hants, yesterday, the coroner said he understood that a charge was being preferred by the American Army authority against the driver James E. Womble of the lorry. The coroner adjourned the inquest.

Extract from the Hampshire Telegraph dated Friday 14 January 1944
At an American General Court Marshall in a Southern Hampshire town of Tuesday James E. Womble was acquitted of three charges of manslaughter.
The charges arose out of a road accident on New Year’s Eve when a service vehicle driven by the accused ran into a que of about 30 people who were waiting for a bus in the blackout.
