The pilot is Hero of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Baranov. Shot down 21 enemy aircraft one of which was an Italian C-200.

His unit received some new Yak-1 fighters in 1943. While test flying one, there was a serious mechanical problem. He did not survive the crash.
