George Arthur SHAW. Private S4/143370, 17th Field Bakery, Royal Army Service Corps. Born 1882 to John William, Coal miner and Sarah Ann Shaw. 1891 residing with his parents and siblings at 23 Belfield Street, Ilkeston. 1901 still with his parents and siblings at 58 Mill Street, Ilkeston, occupation baker, breadmaker. Husband of Laura, nee Wilson who he married at Basford Registry Office, 19 March 1907. He was residing with his wife and daughter, Dora, (born at Ilkeston 23 June 1907), at his mother’s residence 430 Cotmanhay Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Joined the army at Aldershot 18 October 1915 aged 33 years and 6 months, occupation, baker. 5 January 1918 he was posted on detachment with the 156 Protection Company, Kegworth. He embarked to France 16 May 1918, whilst in France he fell ill about January 1918 and was invalided to Netley Hospital from France 19 February 1919 suffering from nervous breakdown, later transferred to Ford Derby War Hospital, finally to Derby County Asylum, 3 June 1919. He was medically discharged whilst in the asylum on 5 June 1919 as being no longer physically fit for War Service. His disability was general paralysis of the insane. Died in Derby County Asylum 24 June 1919 aged 37. The cause of his death was recorded in his army record as Nervous Breakdown. (may have been shell shock) His widow was granted a gratuity 25 June 1919. She gave her address as 4 Florence Terrace, Simkin Street, Nottingham.
