I received this photo years ago of my great-grandfather, Dennis Deveaux, from Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
I'm not sure what intrigued me the most about this photo: the men in their uniforms, the vintage cars, or the fact that Dennis treated my grandfather like his own son. I've heard that they were quite close, especially after my great-grandfather passed away in 1937.
This picture was likely taken on Prince Edward Island. Dennis is the shorter man in the photo, but I have no idea who the tall, serious-looking man is, and I've wondered for years about his identity. It's kind of funny because I know a 25-year-old who has a very similar facial structure. At one point, I thought he might be a relative, but his mom firmly said “no.” Even after I showed the two photos to a friend, he was astonished by the physical similarities.
