That loveliest and greatest of Dads, that one that moulded me, engendered in me a sense of justice and right from wrong. Who gave me the strength to strike out on my own but never alone. Who breathed into me the willingness to help others and be of service, to defend those that couldn't defend themselves. My Dad, a son of a man, a man among men. If there is a Valhalla you are surely there now and we will see you again.
Thank you for my life and for teaching me how to be a dad to my kids.
We are broken and in bits but we will mend, heal and go on but with a piece of the sun forever clouded.
I love you Dad

"Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good."

We had a little award ceremony of our own a few years ago and my 2 brothers and I, all R.A.N. veterans presented our dad with his GCM with Suez Canal clasp to him. He had served 6 years with the colours, in the Royal Artillery 1946-52 in Germany, Malta, Egypt, Libya. He never knew he was entitled to a GCM until we applied in 2013
My brother Martin R.A.N. 1977-1983, Shane (me) R.A.N. 1974-86, dad and my brother Stuart R.A.N. 1976-1982
One of the "Greatest generation" who cast a giant shadow. We will never see their likes again ??
