Two fellow in England bought this T-54 tank on ebay for $37,000. While cleaning it, they found gold bars worth about $2.5 million in a fuel tank. The gold was believed to have been looted from Kuwait during Desert war 1.

Reported in the link below, the two men "turned the gold over to police".

Is it illegal to possess gold in Britain? I would have cashed in & never mentioned where I got it other than maybe to say I found a good spot while prospecting in the mountains! SW

The Gold would have been considered as Treasure and they would have legally been obliged to have declared it to the Queens Coroner is responsible for those things. Personally I am with You @NebrHogger I would have kept my mouth shut and sold it bit by bit.

I didn't realize you had to declare such things in your country. A close friend and I did find a little gold while prospecting in 1973. "Gold fever" is a real condition! SW

That stuff would have gone into a hole in the ground faster than you could blink if it was me. Even allowing for the lousy exchange rate from a gold dealer under the circumstances would have left enough to retire on
