Other Post Singapore in 1952

I was 5 years old when father was in Singapore in 1952. He took me to RAF base and I remember they were jets. I think Hawker Hunters. However what I do recall is being hoisted up under an aircraft through a small square hatch in the belly. I often wondered what it was. I also seem to recall a seaside location. Ideas?

The Hunter were not yet in service in 1952.
