Don't be sad, at least in those days they were sunk to promote turism and habitats, now they sink next to the Lisbon Naval Base, a la Murmansk

I'm always sad to see warships being sunk although it's certainly a better fate than being "recycled" (scrapped). Being sunk as a target or reef is kind of a "beautiful death" for a warship.

These photos are heartbreaking to me. The result of ineptness on the part of the government but more importantly speaks to the lack of interest of the higher ups in the navy. Even if these old girls were to be scrapped or sunk, allowing them to get to such a condition is simply abhorrent to me. It costs very little to pump bilges and have a skeleton watch keep an eye on them and correct any basic issues before they become major ones as the photos evidence :(
