I was pleased to see the Co-op grocery store had their enormous American flag at half mast in honor or Pearl Harbor Day.

Nebr had (probably not any more due to no surviving vets) Pearl Harbor Survivor license plates. Dad could have had lifetime free plates on his ride but wanted nothing to do with them. I get that.

He spoke very little of events that day unless "encouraged" with a beer or two. He spoke of training after the fact relating to surviving in water covered in burning oil. Sailors had to jump in a pool covered in same to practice the technique of spreading the burning oil with their hands to get a breath of air before diving again. In theory, they would be able to swim away from the fire.

He was on the Battleship, Nevada which got underway but was beached to prevent being sunk & blocking the harbor.
