A little-known organisation of the French Résistance is the Armée Juive (Jewish army, no less!) created in January 1942 in Toulouse by Abraham Polonski. It took the name Organisation Juive de Combat in 1943 when it coordinated with the Mouvement de Jeunesse Sioniste (Zionist youth organization) and the Éclaireurs israélites de France (Jewish scouts).
They started saving Jews from the Vichy and Nazi persecutions by exfiltrating to Spain then to Israel (they were hardcore Zionists).
Then as they recruited informants, they identified and executed those kollabos who turned Jews in to milice de Vichy and Gestapo, with quite some success.
Then they created a Maquis in Espinassier to attack Nazi troops. They were successful in provoking the Germans to attack them with tanks and airplanes in July '44, which was exactly what the Allied needed to fixate troops and equipment away from Normandy and Provence.
Their 900-strong force participated with the Corps Francs in the liberation of several towns in the southwest and Auvergne. They freed Puy-en-Velay and captured 4,000 Germans.
The Armée Juive also had the unfortunate honor of suffering the last actions of the infamous SS Alois Brunner, who captured and deported 25 of their members as part of the last convoy to the Drancy concentration camp. Several managed to escape during transit.
The Organisation Juive de Combat is one of the lesser-known branches of Résistance.
