This Thursday the 1st of July will see the City of New York host the Royal Navy’s aircraft carrier, HMS Invincible together with the frigate HMS Cornwall and the supply ship RFA Fort George.

The six-day visit will be the culmination of an extremely successful deployment for Invincible and the Royal Navy Task force which left the UK in early May. The task group had gathered on the eastern seaboard to carry out exercises with the units of the US Second Fleet headed up by the USS John F Kennedy. The series of manoeuvres, which were named Blinding Storm, were designed to exercise the, already close, co-operation between the two navies and included ships from other European nations and Canada.

The entire ship’s company is looking forward to visiting New York immensely. Indeed, Captain Neil Morisetti, the Commanding Officer of Invincible commented:

“New York will be the final and most prestigious visit of the deployment. The city has an excellent reputation for hosting Royal Navy ships and it gives me particular pleasure to be able to help New York celebrate the 4th of July.”

There are going to be several high profile events during the visit, including the ringing of the New York Stock Exchange bell by Invincible’s Captain and an open air concert given by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines in Hanover Square on Friday 2nd July at 1230. There will also be an opportunity for the people of New York to tour the ships, alongside pier 88, between 1200 and 1600 on the 4th of July.

To commemorate the ship’s visit to New York Invincible’s crew have produced a photograph in which nearly 500 of them spelt out “NY 04” on the flight deck.
