I was afraid to see The Wall for the first time; afraid it’s impact might be more than I could manage. As a result, I flanked from across the Mall, topping a small rise, far enough away, I hoped, that I wouldn’t feel shattered. This is a (very poor) photo of my first sight of the memorial. It seemed eminently appropriate that it was raining. Later (several days), finding my cousin’s name on The Wall WAS shattering, as was the terrible weight of the significance of the memorial. You see, I was supposed to be with them...
