USS ESSEX is the second ship in the WASP - class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships and the fifth ship of the Navy to bear the name.

USS JUNEAU was the 7th ship in the AUSTIN - class of Amphibious Transport Docks and the third ship in the Navy to bear the name. Last homeported at Sasebo, Japan, the JUNEAU was decommissioned at Naval Base San Diego on October 31, 2008. The ship is now laid-up at Pearl Harbor, Hi., awaiting final disposal.

USS GERMANTOWN is the second WHIDBEY ISLAND class dock landing ship and the first ship in her class to serve in the Pacific.
On September 1, 2002, USS HARPERS FERRY relieved USS GERMANTOWN as a forward deployed naval unit in Sasebo, Japan. GERMANTOWN returned to San Diego, Ca., where she underwent a $20 million overhaul. In 2011, GERMANTOWN again shifted her homeport to Sasebo, releasing the HARPERS FERRY for departure to San Diego.

USS FORT McHENRY is the third WHIDBEY ISLAND class dock landing ship. In April 2006, the USS TORTUGA (LSD 46) replaced the USS FORT McHENRY as a forward deployed naval unit in Sasebo, Japan. The hull swap was part of the Navy's long-range plan to routinely replace older ships assigned to the Navy's Forward Deployed Naval Force with newer or more capable ships. TORTUGA's crew brought the McHENRY back to Little Creek, Va.
