HMAS Australia, 1950. the matelot is also wearing a "Shore Patrol" wrist band which signify's he is assigned from the days duty watch section to go ashore as Shore patrol to sort out the drunks and those in "peril". The Shore patrol were mostly everyday sailors detailed off to do the duty SP job.
This lad was probably on the turps the next night, dodging the SP himself
I had SP duty many times as a very ordinary seaman on my first "Up Top" trip in 1975, an eye opening 6 months deployment
