He was the son of William Reynolds and Adeline West, of 41, Lowther Drive, Enfield, Middlesex. He attended Minchenden Grammar School between 1935 and 1937. He was flying Airspeed Oxford Mk 11 V73783 of 6 Service Flying Training School, Little Rissington, he was undertaking a solo sortie of singe engine flying when he allowed the aircraft to lose speed in a flat turn and it entered a spin and crashed at Chipping Norton airfield. The instructor was criticised for allowing LAC West to fly solo, as on past asymmetric flying he had allowed his aircraft to get in a spin.
