There are army records for a John Parkes which I feel are not the same person who is at rest in Hanley Cemetery. The records for John Parkes show he joined 23 October 1906, he gave his occupation as a potter, later as coal miner. His overseas postings were, East Indies, 16 October 1908 to 18 August 1916. Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 19 August 1916 to 4 March 1919. Home posting from 5 March 1919 to demobilisation 2 April 1919. His rank throughout his records was a Private and he was not promoted to Lance Corporal and never transferred to the Worcestershire Regiment.
On the 1911 census John Parkes and his wife (same ones on the headstone) were in lodgings. The John Parkes in the army records was stationed in the East Indies with the North Staffordshire Regiment during 1911 so it appears not to be the same person.
The only Medal Card found for a John Parkes holding a Military Medal is Private 15054 7th North Staffordshire Regiment and later Lance Corporal 380747, 9th Worcestershire Regiment.
