I have found quite a few references to this photo suggesting it was a soldier of the St Nazaire Raid WW2 however it is in fact a Portrait of a soldier from No. 3 Commando armed with a 'Tommy gun' and wearing a balaclava, at Largs in Scotland, 2 May 1942. (Photo by Lt. W T Lockeyear/ Imperial War Museums). He may have been involved but cant find a direct or confirmed connection.

Anyway here is some info about the raid

St Nazaire Raid
In 1942, the British Navy faced a grave threat: the Tirpitz. Designed to harass and break British shipping lines, the Tirpitz stood poised to rule the English Channel. Even if the Brits could damage her at sea, she could easily retreat to France and receive repairs. So, British high command devised a scheme: find the only drydock capable of sustaining the Tirpitz and destroy it.
