Extended Description
Joseph SHELVIN, Sailor, Merchant Seaman on S.S. Runo (Hull) which was sunk by U-Boat 593 at 00.22 and 00.24 hours on 11 Apr, 1943, U-593 fired four single torpedoes at two ships in a small convoy consisting of four steamers and three escorts about 60 miles northeast of Bardia and observed a hit amidships on the first ship which broke in two and sank and saw a hit on the second. However, the only ship hit was the Runo (Master C.H. Tully). 16 crew members were lost. The master, 15 crew members and five gunners were rescued and landed at Alexandria on 13 April.
He was the son of Thomas and Bridget and husband of Ada of Salford Lancashire. he is commemorated on his wife, Ada memorial at Agecroft Cemetery, Longley Road, Manchester and also on the Tower Hill Memorial, London
