John GODWIN, Devonshire Regiment 1889-1910, Military Police 1914-1919 died at 12 Council Houses, Quenington on the 24 February 1950, 80. In 1871 he was living with his parents Richard Godwin and Mary nee Edwards and his siblings at his grandfather, James Edwards home in Marston Meysey, Wiltshire. 1911 he was and army pensioner, single, and living at Verne Citadel, Verne Portland, Dorset. His occupation was a waiter in and army canteen. On the 25th July 1918 he married Margaret Boulton, spinster the Bristol Registry Office.. 2nd November 1919 he was living at The Butts, Poulton, Gloucestershire. At rest in St Swithin Church Cemetery, Quenington, Gloucestershire.
Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined the Devonshire Regiment on the 26th May 1889 aged 19 and 2 months as Private 2590 and posted to F Company. He lived at Marston Meysey, Gloucestershire, occupation, labourer. He was discharged at Tidworth, Wiltshire at private on the 20th May 1910 His 2nd period of engagement had terminated. He had been the station butcher for three and a half years from receiving his butchery certificate on the 20th June 1906 whilst in Rangoon. He saw service in India and South Africa (Boer War) He was awarded the Indian Medal 1854 with clasp, Burma 1884 -92. India Medal 1895 with clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and Terah 1897-98. South African Medal, and King's South Africa Medal. Good Conduct Medal, 1907. He re joined the army on the 26th October 1914 age 45 and 180 days, living at Marston Meysey, Wiltshire. He was posted to the Wiltshire Regiment as private 885. On the 16th September 1916 he was posted to Garrison Battalion, Dorset Regiment at private 25638. Transferred to the 13th Devonshire Regiment Works Battalion as private 51744 on the 3rd February 1917 the to the Labour Battalion as private 140578. He was finally transferred to the Military Foot Police as Lance Corporal P10883 at Aldershot on the 5th June 1917. On the 18th February 1919 he was transferred to Class Z Army Reserve. His home address was 108 Pool Keynes, Wiltshire.
His mother now called Swinford was living at 6 Vines Cottages, Fairford, Gloucestershire.
