Since he wears no branch insignia, I am not sure if he is Infantry, admin, or a postal clerk.

Chevrons denote Sergeant First Class (E-7)

He wears the 1st Ranger Battalion scroll above the U.S. Fifth Army shoulder patch.
This would have him serving in the North African & Italian Campaign.

His ribbons are the Silver Star Medal (center) I cannot make out the next ribbon, but guess it's the American Defense Service. Then European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (with 3 Campaign stars) last is the Army Good Conduct.
