Peter HOBSON

Extended Description
Private 146 Peter HOBSON of F (foxtrot) Company, 1st Gordon Highlanders who was drowned at Malta on the 11th June 1887 aged 24 and 10 months. Erected by the Officers, Non Commissioned Officers and Men of the above company as a mark of esteem and respect.

These headstones were works of art in their own right. The amount of work and effort it must have taken the sculptor to produce a memorial for a simple private soldier must have been considerable. Funerary imagery is well preserved at Pieta Military Cemetery as shown here. The sphinx for Egypt, the Royal Tiger for India of the Gordon Hldrs and the two inverted torches on the side of a classical temple are well carved. As an extra touch the artist portrayed on the plinth a fine relief echoing the inscription of how the deceased met his end. (Note also the decorated flora cross on the adjacent memorial.)
