Nurse Heritage.
The funeral of Nurse Audrey Heritage, V.A.D., took place last week at the Hastings Borough Cemetery with full military honours. The deceased had been a nurse at the Hospital of St. John, and was discharging her duties until within a day of her death.
The first part of the service was at Holy Trinity Church, where Canon Cook officiated. In addition to the father and mother of the deceased, Miss Bates (the Commandant of the Hospital) and several nursing sisters attended, also the District Commissioner of the Girl Guides (Mrs. Jarvis), the Secretary (Miss Bassett), and members of the 1st Hastings Company (of which deceased was till recently a Patrol Leader). Several of the Hospital patients also attended to show the last mark of respect. At the conclusion of the service the Organist played the Funeral March. The coffin, covered with the Union Jack, was borne from the church to the hearse by members of the St. John Brigade, the Girl Guides forming a guard of honour. At the Cemetery the 4th Norfolks provided a firing party, and the "Last Post" was sounded.
