Alexander WHITE. Private 159754, 1st Canadian Infantry.
Born 7 April 1887 to Henry and Margaret White, nee Bennett of 18, Mary Street Newtownards County Down Ireland. Irish 1901 Census. With his parents and siblings at his grandparents Matthew and Ann Bennett at 34 May Street, Newtownards. Occupation aged 14 years
apprentice clerk.
Joined 18 March 1916 at Toronto 81st Canadian Expeditionary Force aged 28 years and 11 months. Resident in Ireland, 18 Mary Street Newtownards, civilian occupation, Painter and Decorator. Transferred 12 May 1916 to 95th Battalion. Embarked for France 29 September 1916 and marched into Canadian Base Depot to await his deployment to his unit. 3 October 1916 joined 1st Canadian Entrenching Battalion in the Field.
11 April 1917 he was seriously injured at Vimy Ridge, receiving gunshot wounds to his spine. Admitted the same day into No 6 British Red Cross Hospital Etaples and died from his wounds later that day aged 30 years.
Commemorated on a family memorial at Movilla Cemetery Newtownards County Down Northern Ireland. At rest in Etaples Military Cemetery, France
