- Private 425307, John Herbert SHARDLOW. 11th Canadian Reserve Battalion, (Manitoba) formerly 45th Battalion (Manitoba) Canadian Expeditionary Force.
Born 15 August 1877 to John Herbert and Sarah Shardlow of Clay Cross. 1881-1891 with his parents and siblings at High Street, Clay Cross. 1891 occupation, butchers apprentice. Husband of Sarah Shardlow nee Kirby who he married 27 March 1896 at the parish church of Ashover, Derbyshire, aged 24 occupation butcher, residing at Clay Cross. He separated from his wife in 1906. The 17 March 1906 aged 33 years embarked from Liverpool to Halifax Canada on ship, Corean. 1911 his wife and daughter, Dorothy Maud was residing at Ashover. At the time of his death his widow was residing at Grove Road, Ashover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Died at 9.05am in Moore Barracks Hospital, Shorncliffe Kent of pneumonia 3rd February 1917 aged 45. (Shorncliffe was used as a staging post for troops destined for the Western Front during the First World War and in April 1915 a Canadian Training Division was formed there)

Notes from his army record
Joined up 19 May 1915 into 45th Battalion (Manitoba) Canadian Expeditionary Force aged 38, occupation, butcher. Next of kin his wife now called Sarah Booth of Parkmill Farm, Westhouses, Alfreton, Derbyshire.
Embarked from Halifax with the 45th Bn C.E.F. 13 March 1916 on S.S. Bailie disembarked in England 25 March 1916. and taken to Caesar’s Camp, Canadian Army at Folkstone. 21 June 1916 whist at this camp he was promoted to Lance Corporal. 6 July 1916 he was transferred to the 11th Battalion at St Martin Plain Shorncliffe. 26 August 1916 attached to 11th Battalion. He reverted to ranks (Pte) 20 November 1916. He went sick at Shorncliffe and was admitted on the 2 February 1917 in Moore Barracks Hospital suffering from Pericarditis effusion, (build up of extra fluid in the space around the heart) and Endocarditis, (are and potentially fatal infection of the inner lining of the heart) and Lobar pneumonia, left lung. He died at 9.05am in ward 26 of pneumonia. His widow was granted a war pension 4 February 1917.
