Aftermath Graebner's 9th SS Recon Column

RAF aerial reconnaissance photo of the aftermath of SS Captain Viktor Graebner's attempt to break through the 2 Para perimeter of Arnhem Bridge, about 0930hrs on Monday 18th September '44. Graebner & elements of his recon battalion had been ordered to scout out the area of Nijmegen Bridge & had passed southwards over Arnhem Bridge before Lt. Col. Frost & his force arrived at the north end of the bridge the previous evening. The resultant devastation of the column, in which Graebner was also killed, was as a result of him finding nothing at Nijmegen and trying to return to Arnhem town centre to join other German forces there.
