Yesterday, February 26, during one of the Ukrainian counterattacks near Avdiivka in the Donetsk Oblast, Russian troops destroyed an M1 Abrams tank belonging to the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It is one of the best armed Ukrainian brigades, equipped with the best Western equipment: M1A1 and Leopard 2A6 tanks and M2 infantry fighting vehicles.

The M1 tank attacked the Russian positions alone, making it a highly visible target on which the Russians concentrated their fire.

The tank was reportedly first hit by a Lancet missile and then finished off by small FPV drones. The ammunition magazine was hit, but the specific design of this element saved the crew from death. The ammunition magazine of the M1 tank is located at the rear of the turret and is isolated from the interior by a movable armored partition. A specially weakened element in the structure was placed on top of the turret. Thanks to this, in the event of ignition, the entire force of the ammunition explosion is directed upwards, which prevents the tower and the entire vehicle from bursting. The destruction of the Ukrainian M1 Abrams was recorded by soldiers of the Russian 15th Motorized Infantry Brigade.
During Desert Storm I was part of Task Force 1-41 Infantry. 3-66 lost five Abrams tanks. I saw three of them burn. They did not want it out there but one was taken out by a shot to the side by a T-55. It's not an invincible tank. People need to quit believing fairy tales about invincible tanks and other BS I commonly read. On the chart at this page 4-8 were with our task force. Once again I personally saw 3 burn. That being said I think the future is small unmanned combat vehicles. These tanks are death traps these days.

Our task force.

It is obvious that there are no indestructible tanks, there are no magically protected weapons. Equipment is lost in the course of hostilities, losses are always inevitable - this can also be seen in the example of 3 M1 tanks from the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade lost (but not irretrievably).

What is important is the ability of combat vehicles to withstand as many hits as possible and ensure an appropriate level of survivability and safety for the crew who can evacuate and survive. In turn, damaged tanks can be evacuated, repaired or used as spare parts donors for functional vehicles, or simply replaced with another tank. Hence, appropriate equipment reserves and the possession of support vehicles, including recovery vehicles (like M88), capable of evacuating damaged pieces of equipment from the battlefield, are so important. Taking into account the combat experience with the use of M1 tanks, all armored combat vehicles should be equipped with jammers and active defense systems capable of destroying not only grenades fired from anti-tank hand grenade launchers, anti-tank guided missiles or cumulative and high-explosive ammunition fired from cannons. tanks, but also various classes of attack drones.

Are they training on the AMX-10s with the intention of taking them to Ukraine or are they just training the personnel?

The AMX is already in Ukraine but it proved to not really be suited for high intensity front line operations.

They should purely use it as mobile defensive unit roaming behind the front lines and using it's gun and speed from afar.
