I open this thread to discuss policies of the EU as well as other European issues.

I first start with the dealings of the EU towards China.

'China is a necessary partner, like it or not,' says EU foreign affairs chief

It looks like the EU and now with the German presidential lead is more and more losing ground regarding influences of foreign powers.

It pays the price and especially will pay more (with Germany - the master of inaction and political provincialism incarnate by Merkel - leading now) for hesitant and reluctant behaviour towards outside pressure.

The naive and fearful dealings have brought it to a new low. The policies of soft power and putting self interests of member states upfront have led to not being respected nor having any ability left to exert pressure.

Turkey says EU ‘hostage’ to Greece and Cyprus (updated)

The EU said on Friday issues on delimitation of exclusive economic zones and the continental shelf should be addressed through dialogue and negotiation in good faith, in full respect of international law and the pursuit of good neighbourly relations.

“In this respect, we welcome once again the invitation by the government of Cyprus to Turkey to negotiate in good faith the maritime delimitation between their relevant coasts,” the foreign affairs council said.

However, Ankara’s actions “regrettably” go in the opposite direction, the council said.

They called on Turkey to respond to the EU’s repeated calls to cease such activities, show restraint, and respect the sovereignty of Cyprus.

Here again the EU only "regrets" and worsens the situation by not acting and standing by its members.

The trouble already began with this deal:

Turkey-Libya maritime deal triggers Mediterranean tensions

Turkey has boosted military aid to allies in Libya, but the maritime deal that comes with it has inflamed Mediterranean geopolitics. Greece and Egypt were among those to voice vehement objections.

EU leaders make progress in €750bn coronavirus fund talks

European leaders edged close to agreeing to the terms of a €750bn coronavirus bailout fund this morning after the “frugal four” governments signalled they were willing to compromise.

Negotiations ended in the small hours of the morning after the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Sweden were satisfied with €390bn of the emergency fund being made available as grants, according to officials who spoke to Bloomberg.

Talks have been going on for three days and will begin again this afternoon. EU leaders are holding their first in-person meeting in five months to thrash out a deal on the institution’s budget.

…….

In a bid to stimulate the economy, Germany, France and the European Commission have proposed a huge bailout fund.

Under the proposal, the Commission would raise the funds in the bond markets on behalf of all EU states in a radical move. In total, the upcoming EU budget and recovery fund would amount to €1.8 trillion.

Which partly explains the very soft response to China regarding: covid, the Uighurs, HK, etc...

Money talks Ivan . Politicians only virtue signal when it suits them . I'm going to guess China is a very large export market for many a European manufacturer so that will be the EU s priority over right or wrong .

But it also shows Chinas success in dividing the EU, Hungary and Greece are against sanctions. Germany, under Merkel, surely is too much in bed with CCP China.

The problem lies in the future, when you are degraded to a second rate solicitor or even worse.

Not defending ones interests and values for quick money will eventually bite you in the a**.

And what angers me most is this fatalism. A sign of surrender.

The trade balance is so much in Chinas favour that I don`t get this fear. Our politicians are way to small minded and lobbied by the selected few profiting immensely from the China Business.

The CCP is very smart they created a bunch of dependent chiefs which in turn influence local politics and sell gold for glass pebbles.

They should give them nothing unless the release of the money is conditioned to concrete projects and expenses and said projects an expenses are audited by the lenders. In the meantime, they should request that the size of the state apparatus is reduced to a level that can be sustained by the spanish economy, without running into massive debt.

If its not done that way, is like handling money to a meth head, they will burn it fast and no tangible results will ever be obtained.

For example, Spain has double the number of politicians than Germany while having only half of its population. Same goes for the local administrations with germany having 16 Lander Spain has 17 + 2 autonomous cities.

Germany has around 12000 municipalities ruled by around 45.000 elected officials.
Spain has around 8100 municipalities ruled by around 68.500 elected officials.

And remember, Spaniards have to pay all this, while having half the population of Germany.

You can see the trend. The politicians created a Big State, Big Government, on which they can spend their whole live sucking the tit dry while not having to work a single day in their lives in the real economy. In the meantime, the average spanish taxpayer has his blood sucked dry by its fvcking elected officials, who created a massive state, that is simply unsustainable, which structure provides little to no benefit for the average Jose.

Of course Spaniards are partly responsible of this, as they elected the officials who drove them into this ruinous overexpending and debt trap they find themselves in. But thats democracy and indoctrination, when you spend the last 30 years dumbing down and indoctrinating the young generations, you get bunch of retards in office who get millions of votes from flocks of retards.

EU should force the gov to make structural cuts in the administrations, or all this money will have no real effect at solving anything.

And all this comes from an angry Spaniard.

I understand you and your claims are valid. This Problem exists in many EU countries and the "stingy four" have a point in wanting to reduce the money which should be "free".

There is no incentive in pampering existing overblown structures. Albeit Germany seems to be way more efficient we (still) have these structural problems as well.

What was good for Germany in this regard is that we had to go through the unification which posed huge burdens on the state budget.

It is a painful process because the state employees are very vociferous and threaten with the collapse of law and order.

The best way is to find a pragmatic and intelligent way of decoupling state tasks from the budget. It comes at the price of the younger generations having to shoulder more work and getting less social security.

Again this mostly applies to being employed in the free market rather than having it comfortably in the state run sector.

An example is that I for example get the same amount of pension which my father gets. He got it in 2010 I wil get it in 2044.

European societes where for a long time built up on distributing money which was seen as a never ending inflow of cash from the tax payer.

But I have to add that in the case of Germany new state employees have to shoulder much more work than their predecessors did.

And now they are reaching work levels which may be comparable to those in the free market.

Of course the complains mount but in the end they still have a secure job.

The conclusion is that the money has to be spent in a productive way and not be dissipated in unproductive ways.

A main reason I see for these problems is that the politics are lobbied either by big money or by state apparatus politicians.

In Germany we have alot of politicians who never really worked but instead worked their way up through the instituions.

I guess it might be the same in many countries. Such folks are mostly just tools and cause big problems.

EU reaches historic deal on pandemic recovery after fractious summit

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders clinched an historic deal on a massive stimulus plan for their coronavirus-throttled economies in the early hours of Tuesday, after a fractious summit lasting almost five days.

Macron seeks EU sanctions over Turkish ‘violations’ in Greek waters

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (23 July) demanded EU sanctions against Turkey for “violations” of Greek and Cypriot waters and said the European Union should act over the crisis in Libya.

“I stand fully behind Cyprus and Greece in the face of the Turkish violations of their sovereignty. It is unacceptable that the maritime space of (EU) member states be violated and threatened,” Macron told reporters alongside his Cypriot counterpart, Nicos Anastasiades.

Macron has also criticised Turkey for months over Ankara’s role in Libya, and on Thursday said the EU should now push for sanctions. He did not identify nations or people that should be penalised for their involvement in the North African country’s conflict.

Seems like we are surrounded by countries not willing to adhere to international laws. What will the future bring?

EU Insists European Companies Could Replace Huawei in 5g Network

Here the Report

Well now after France also having shut out Huawei it remains interesting what Germany will do.
Merkel is against shutting out Huawei and the Deutsche Telekom under its manager Timotheus Höttges is deeply involved with Huawei.

He went so far that he delegated the network integration of 3000 German households completely to Chinas Huawei. It ended in a catastrophe.
The technicians were all Chinese none of them spoke German. They damaged gas lines during their work leading to evacuations of affected homes.
And in the end nothing worked. But the heck he continues his path trying to excert concessions from Huawei and trying to build his OTC cloud with Huaweis help and continuing to invest in Huawei despite all the warnings coming even from the BND.

A majority of German MOP are against Huawei also the Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Department) aswell as large parts of the CDU.

Just Merkel, Altmaier and consorts lead the "differenced approach" towards Huawei effectively giving the CCP the keys to Germanys network and in consequence to other EU states ones.

After manoeuvering around for long Germanys decision will come after the summer break.

France places de facto 5G ban on Huawei gear by 2028

Paris follows London and Washington in move to bar company

PARIS -- France has informed wireless operators of a de facto ban on using equipment from Huawei Technologies, according to multiple media reports, becoming the latest Western nation to block the Chinese company from its 5G infrastructure.

In other words, ANSSI has essentially given telecommunications operators until 2028 to eliminate Huawei equipment from their networks. Carriers Bouygues Telecom and SFR will likely be pressed to comply with the order since they both sourced 4G tech from the Chinese supplier.

A smart move - just a few weeks ago they were saying no ban would occur but urged companies not to invest in Huawei products.

Sometimes I wonder if the neo-Sultan is tethered to actual reality.

Lemme see......I heard you have natural gas in your territorial waters. We're just going to come and get some. He's like that guy, down the block who you can't stand, coming into your refrigerator and taking your beer.

An explosion damaged a pipeline in southwestern Bulgaria early on Monday, halting transit of Russian natural gas through Bulgaria to Greece, the head state gas company Bulgartransgaz said.

Vladimir Malinov said that there were no casualties from the accident. Some 200 metres of the pipeline near the village of Kulata near the border with Greece were destroyed and the company was already working to repair it.
