As far as I know Ritter I fairly pro-Russia, if not pro-Russia, and critical of the US government but not especially anti-US.
If that is the case I would suppose him going to Russia, Belarus, giving interviews to RT and Sputnik would have gotten under the FBI's skin.
But he isn't an official anymore, is he?

If he is deemed anti-US though, there are far worst individuals in America who would be viewed as loathing of the US. Some of them even sitting in Congress and the Senate.

Pawel Durow founder of telegram has been arrested in France. The Russian national also has a French passport.

French authorities arrested him on allegations of not cooperating with them in regards to curb violence on his messenger.

That's alright they'll pay double time and a half per hour. I once made that a couple of times in 74 working field service Industrial engine repair and I was in all the southern Tx and La refineries for a while working my butt off.
