Radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has conditionally offered to pull his fighters out of the battle-scarred Iraqi holy city of Najaf.
Mr Sadr says he will withdraw his Mehdi Army if US forces also pull back and shelve a murder inquiry against him.
A senior Iraqi official said he believed the US would "honour" the truce, although there has been no official US response.
Mr Sadr has led an insurgency against coalition forces in Iraq since April.
