My first time under fire came about 3 days [JUL66] after I got to my company. We were up by Dak To in the Central Highlands; a VERY dangerous place. We got hit by a small ambush from a nearby tree line. We drop for cover, but not before we take some casualties from the initial burst of fire. I return fire to the treeline like everybody else, but not wildly. I'm doing small bursts like I was trained. I remember being REALLY scared, but not panicky. I control the fear to where I can still function. It pretty much worked like that my whole tour. The fire fight lasted 15-20min., but seemed alot longer. The chaos of it was almost overwhelming. I think I was more scared of doing the wrong thing than anything else. We had 1 KIA and 3 WIA. That was the first time I saw a dead American, and knew it was going to be a long year. Be careful what you ask for.
