what year? The gear looks very cheap and old school.

The internet says 2014 but I am not surprised. Here some of the current images of their SF. They have improved themselves in regards of gear and tactics being used but not that much comparing to other "low budget" NATO armies...

And their Police SF, definitely looking sharper than their militayr equivelant but strange choose of 7.62x39mm on AR15 platform though.

Bulgarian military was surely a huge and threatening force during the Cold War years and equipped by the notably modern weapon systems avaible by the Soviets in contrast of the other Warsaw Pact members to balance-off two major NATO members over the region Greece and Turkey and launching a mass armoured attack through Istanbul from Northern Thrace. I am not remembering the numbers well but I belive Bulgaria was maintaining something around 2,000 tanks including T-72 and T-55s, and roughly around 300 jet fighters including MiG-21,MiG-23, Su-22, Su-25 and MiG-29 in late 1980s...
