Wounded

Removing a wounded man from a dugout

Reactions: BravoZulu
Wounded man on a stretcher, near Arras, France, during World War I. Two soldiers carrying a wounded companion on a stretcher. They are trying to manoeuvre the stretcher out of the main trench into a deeper trench at right angles to it. The pain of the wounded man is apparent in the tension and angles of the way he is lying. If this man survived he might have several hours of waiting before he was treated at a field hospital, followed by more delays before he could be moved to a base hospital. Shock and loss of blood must have been a major factor in many cases. [Original reads: 'Wounded Tommy being removed from trench. (Arras region).']
