Captain, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) Son of William Townsend and Elizabeth Mary nee Gibson of Bradley House, Wotton-under-Edge and husband of Amy Ellen, nee Phillips of The Bungalow, Gold Hill, Chalfont St Peter, Bucks. Died of heart failure 15/4/1918 age 42. Buried in Seaford Cemetery, Susssex

BALLINGER Macarthur. Able Seaman R/1102 Royal Navy Drake Bn. R.N. Born 14 November 1893 at Lydney, Gloucestershire. His mother Alice of Swinhay Farm, Wotton under Edge was informed of his death. Died 21/8/1918. Buried at Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension France III.D.5
BECHER Henry Sullivan. Major 2nd King Edward’s Own Gurkha Rifles(The Sirmoor Rifles) also 34th Sikh Pioneers. Died 2/11/1914 age 38. Son of Col Sullivan, Kingswood House Wotton-under-Edge. Commemorated at Neuve-Chapelle Memorial France Panel 18-20

BIGNALL John. Pte 27304 Royal Warwickshire Regiment Son of Samuel and Emma, 102 Alfreton Road Nottingham. Drowned at sea 13/3/1918 whilst passenger on SS Patterson. His mother was granted a war gratuity 18 September 1918 revised 8 December 1919. Commemorated at Hollybrook memorial Southampton
BOW Cyril. Private 77063 Durham Light Infantry. Born 1883 to John and Hannah Bow of Wotton under Edge, Gloucestershire. 1911 residing with is wife Ada Emily and their son John Charles at No1 Regents Buildings Regent Street, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. Killed in action 25 October 1917 in Belgium. Buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.
BOYCE James Ferguson. Trooper 1701, No 1 Household Battalion, formerly 3224, Kent Yeomanry. Born 5 January 1895, baptised 14 February 1945 to James and Augusta Boyce. 1901 residing with his parents and siblngs at Wotton under Edge. At the time of his death his parents were residing at The Willows, Biddenden, Kent. Died in a POWin Germany 26 May 1917. His mother was granted a war gratuity 27 February 1918 revised 30 October 1919. His effects went to his mother £487 17s 8d. Buried in Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension, Belgium.
BROODBANK Percival Ernest Pte 266142, 2/6th Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1886 to Ernest Alexander and Ellen Maria Broodbank, of 4, Manor Park, Redland, Bristol. The 22 March 1914 he married Nellie Powell Wilkes at St Mary, Wotton under Edge. He enlisted at Wotton under Edge on the 2 September 1914 into the Army Ordnance Corps and posted to Aldershot the next day as Private 01717 aged 28
He had previously served in the RAMC Yeo. 30 October 1914 he was discharge at Aldershot, not being likely to become an efficiant soldier. After his death his widow remarried to Mr Jones. of Calcot, Tetbury, Glos. Died 2 December 1917 aged 31. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
BROWN Francis Charles.. Pte TF/242337 1/8 Middlesex Regiment Died 16/8/1917 age 30. Son of James and Elizabeth, Black Hall Berkeley Glos. Husband of Georgina Eleanor, Parsonage Street Dursley. Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium
BURFORD George. Pte 204596 ‘X’ Coy 2Bn Hampshire Regiment. Died 6/9/1918 age 35. Son of Mrs and Mrs William Blizzard Burford, Wotton under Edge, husband of Frances E, Pine House Stow-on-the-Wold Glos. Buried at Arneke British Cemetery France VIII.A.13
BUTCHER William Lewis. Pte 9852 2nd Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1894 in Wotton under Edge. Killed in action 10 May 1915. Husband Winifred, nee Jackson. She was granted a war gratuity 24 September 1915, revised 4 July 1919. Buried in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Belgium.
BUTLER Ambrose Hunter. Pte 240076, 21st Bucks Bn, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Born 1897 to James and Amelia of Pounds Ground, Wotton under Edge 1911 residing with his parents and siblings at The Cloud, Wotton under Edge, occupation, carpenter’s helper. Died of wounds 31 March 1918. Buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
BYE Alfred William Stoker. (See belowe)
The only A.W Bye with a connection to Wotton under Edge is the following. Alfred William BYE. Born 19 August 1898 at Wotton under Edge to Charles and Annie Bye, nee Turner of Sinwell, (an area in the town) Wotton under Edge. His occupation aged 13 was coal haling. He joined the 3rd Gloucestershire Regiment 24 October 1916 as Private 2295, His residence at that time was nr Wotton under Edge Grammar School. 24 February 1915 he was with the BEF in France. 25 November 1915 with the MEF at Salonika. Returned to UK 23 August 1916. 25 April 1917 married Lilian May Greenwood at Didcot, Gloucestershire. 18 August 1920 he was demobilised. He had previously served and it looks like Royal Navy !!. He re-joined the army 26 January 1921 and was posted as Private 5174358 5th Gloucestershire. His residence with his family was Laurel Cottage, Brickyard, Wotton under Edge, occupation, rubber winder. He was discharged 4 July 1921.
There is only one A W listed with the CWGC and that is Albert Walter in Australian Infantry. Native of Australia. No A. W. BYE and variant serving in the Royal Navy in WW1
On the 12 August 1942 there was a Petty Officer, Stoker P/K 59924 Alfred William BYE Royal Navy on HMS Cairo who died at sea He was native of Norwich Norfolk.

Born 1894 at Kingswood, nr Wotton under Edge to Albert and Julia. 1901 residing with parents and siblings at Crow Meadow, Kingwood. 1911 boarder at the home of the Cooper family of Valley Road, Coombe, Wotton under Edge, occupation, painter. Died 6/4/1915. Commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France
CANDY Alfred George. Pte 202628 8th Gloucestershire Regiment.. Born in Berkeley, Glos 1885 to William and Rose Candy, nee Turner. 1891 residing with his parents and siblings at Back Lane. 1901 with his parents and siblings at Gloster Street both in Wotton under Edge. 28 November 1908 he married Elizabeth Mary Jackson at St George’s church, Falfield, Gloucestershire. 1911 residing with his wife at Bradley Street, Wotton under Edge., occupation house painter. Died in a hospital Charleville 13/9/1918 age 31. His widow was granted a war gratuity 5 May 1919 revised 19 September 1919.. Buried at Terlinctun British Cemetery Wimille France XVI.F.22
CHAPPELL Albert Thomas. Pte 21642, 1st Royal West Kent Regiment. Formerly Pte 204063, 13th Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1894 at Tresham. Gloucestershire to Albert James and Kate Elizabeth Chappell. 1901 residing with his parents and siblings at The Sheet, Hawkesbury nr Wotton under Edge, Glos. 1911 with his brother William Albert, mother and Stepfather Richard Godfrey at Bowldon nr Tetbury, Gloucestershire. occupation farm labourer. He enlisted into the Gloucestershire Regiment 9 December 1915 aged 22 years and 3 months and posted to the army reserve to await his mobilization. He was residing at Ragonel Terrace, Sinwell, Wotton under Edge. The 23 December 1916 he married Winifred Tavinner at the Tabernacle, Wotton under Edge. Called to the colours 22 February 1917 at Horfield Barracks, Horfield, Bristol. 11 June 1917 embarked for France. 21 April 1918 received a shrapnel wound to his left thigh. 6 October 1918 transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died of influenza at No 2 Causality Clearing Station 1 December 1918. Buried in Caudry British Cemetery, France.

COOPER Frederick Ernest. Pte 1743, 2/4th Gloucestershire Regiment. Born 1884 at North Nibley, nr Wotton under Edge to Thomas and Mary Ann, nee Moore of Wotton under Edge. Died of wounds in 13 General Hospital, Boulogne France 18 May 1915. His widow Rosina was granted a war gratuity 25 October 1915 revised 17 July 1919, She was then called Rose Wytchard.
CORNOCK Archibald Alexander. Sgt 8540 1st Border Regiment Died 14/5/1915 age 26. Son of Charles and Ruth, Bear packer’s Cottages, Wotton under Edge. Commemorated at Helles Memorial Turkey.
CORNOCK Albert Edward. Pte 15531 10th Gloucestershire Regiment Died 9/4/1919 age 40. Son of John, husband of Bessie, Silver Street Sinwell Wotton under Edge. Buried at St Mary Churchyard, Wotton
CORNOCK Ernest Charles. Able Seaman J/23989 HMS “Vivid” Royal Navy. Born 16 June 1896 to Charles and Millicent, Valley Road, Wotton under Edge. Died 14/4/1919 age 22. Buried at St Mary Churchyard Wotton.
CORNOCK Ralph Ernest. Able Seaman ((Petty Officer, Coast Guard) 142188 HMS “ Monmouth” Royal Navy. Born 24 June 1871 to Charles and Ruth Cornock Sinwell, Wotton under Edge, They resided at the time their son’s death at Bear Packers Almshouses Wotton under Edge. He married Mary Rosina Ferris 20 October 1898 at St Giles Church, Hillesley, nr Wotton under Edge. 1911 residing with his family at 2 Coast Guard Station Cottage, Countisbury, Lymouth, North Devon. At the time of his death his widow was residing at La-Bassee Cottage Potters-Pouch Wotton. Died at sea on the sinking of his ship of the Chilean Coast 1/11/1914 age 44. Commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorila Devon.
CORNOCK Sidney. Pte 18310 C Coy 13 Gloucestershire Regiment Died 25/10/1916 age 32. Son of Charles and Ruth of Wotton husband of Agnes Maud, Church Lane High Street Berkeley Glos. Buried at Serre Road Cemetery No1 France VIII.C.21
DANDO Henry Mortimer. L/Cpl 30646 14th Gloucestershire Regiment attached to 7th Royal West Kent Regiment. Son of Albert and Sarah Ann Maria Dando of Old Town, Wotton under Edge. Died 17/7/1918. His mother, sister, Dorothy A and brother Frank were granted a joint gratuity 20 May 1919. His brother Albert was granted a gratuity 28 July 1919. Buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery Germany XII.F.25

DEACON Edward. Private 2627, 27th Australian Infantry, A.I.F.. Born 1891 at Wotton under Edge to James Thomas and Eliza Deacon, of “Wotton under Edge, 81 Melbourne Avenue later of 215, Melbourne Street North Adelaide, South Australia.
Joined the army 19 August 1915 aged 24, occupation electrician. Embarked for Alexandria 21 March 1916 on H.T. Oriana. Disembarked Alexandria for Marseilles 27 March 1916. Joined the ANZAC Entrenching Battalion 25 June 1916. Killed in action 5 August 1916 aged 25. Commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.

EXELL George Henry. Pte 8584 Royal Marine Light Infantry Born 7 February 1878 to William and Mary. 1891 residing with his parents at siblings at Gloster Row, Wotton under Edge. Enlisted 5 May1897 occupation, labourer. 1911serving in the Royal Marines, patient in Royal Naval Hospital, East Stonehouse, Devon. Died 25 April 1915. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey including Gallipoli.

(Wotton under Edge is not to far) Enlisted 27 January 1911 into the Royal Navy on HMS Impregnable. occupation, baker. He was invalided out of the nay 9 February 1911, defective vision. Husband of Elizabeth, Gloucester Street Wotton under Edge. Died 10/4/1918 age 23. Buried at Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery Souchez France XX.B.19

Residing at Bradley Street, Wotton under Edge. 17 October 1915 he married Alice Palmer (widow) at St Mary’s, Wotton under Edge. he was a serving soldier. Killed in action 27/7/1916.His widow Alice was granted a war gratuity 27 October 1916 revised 17 September 1919. She was called Mrs Alice Weeks. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
