WELLS, William, Corporal 104170, 300th Electrical and Mechanical Coy, Royal Engineers, died at Bangalore India, 30th October 1918 aged 30. He was the son of John and Sarah of Long Street, Thirsk and husband of Jessie Ida King (formerly Wells), of 45A, Pinchbeck Road, Spalding, Lincolnshire. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Thirsk Cemetery, Yorkshire and is at rest in Hosur Road Cemetery, Bangalore, India. Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He joined up on the 24th July 1915 and was posted to 22t Field Coy, Royal Engineers aged 29 years and 99 days. He lived at Long Street on enlistment and was a store keep. On the20th May 1914 he married Jesse Ida nee Wood at Balby, Doncaster. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 9th October 1915 and Corporal 11th November 1915. He embarked for Mesopotamia on the 28th December 1916 . he was admitted to the 23rd British Stationary Hospital Baghdad with heat stroke, transferred on the 20th July 1917 seriously ill with heat stroke to the 3rd British General Hospital, On the 8th August 1917 he was invalided from Basrah to India on Hospital Ship Varsla wit the effects of heat, arriving on the 9th August 1917. He died in Station Hospital Bangalore India from Influenza on the 30th October 1918 whilst serving with the 300th Electrical Mechanical Coy and was buried the next day,31st. His wife lived at Long Street, Thirsk and was Matron of Lambert Memorial Hospital, Thirsk
