DEWHURST, George Charnley Littleton, Lieutenant, 1st Rifle Brigade killed in action 1/7/1916 aged 24. Son of Mrs. Annie M. Jones (formerly Dewhurst), of Aberuchill, Comrie, Perthshire, and the late Littleton Dewhurst. Buried at Serre Road Cemetery, No 2, Somme, France.
LONG, Francis Stuart, Lieutenant, 1/5th South Lancashire Regiment killed in action 8th September 1916 aged 19 at Delville Wood. Son of Alice Long of Geranium Cottage, Park Lane, Reigate and the late Francis Long, M.A. His father on the 11/10/1920 applied for his son’s medals and they were set to him in Weaverham. TAYLOR, Eric Francis Howard, 2nd Lieutenant, 23rd Royal Fusiliers, killed in action 27th July 1916. Son of Charles Howard and Gertrude Mary of (1911) Hampole Priory, Doncaster. His father applied for his medals on the 5/10/1921 and were posted to Middlewood Hall, Darfield near Barnsley (Wills and Admin, Ancestry.co.uk) He lived at Middlewood Hall, Darfield his effects went to Charles Howard Taylor, Esquire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

RMR/B/907). H.M.S. "Goliath died on the 13th May 1915 aged 31 The ship was torpedoed and sunk by German-commanded, Turkish torpedo boat. He was the son of Samuel and Mary Ann of Stockton heath, Warrington, Cheshire. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

ASHLEY, William. Lance Corporal 13918, B, Company, 10th Cheshire Regiment died of wounds 12th July 1916 aged 28. Son of Joseph and Agnes Ashley, of Barnton, Cheshire and husband of Annie Tomlinson (formerly Ashley), of 9, Forest Street, Weaverham, Cheshire. He is at rest at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, Somme, France
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He joined up on the 22nd August 1914 aged 26, occupation, labourer and lived at Northwich, Cheshire. He had previously served in the Royal Navy on H.M.S. London. Discharge by purchase from the navy.
On the 26th September 1915 he embarked from Folkestone for France. On the 1st July 1916 he was promoted to Lance Corporal in the field. He was wounded in action and died of his wounds at 38 Casualty Clearing Station, Bray sur Somme.
He left a wife Annie nee Allman who he married at St Mary's Church, Weaverham and tow children. Eric born 30th January 1912 and Jack, born 7th February 1915 both at Weaverham. His mother had remarried and was called Agnes Plumb, wife of Jack of 2 Moss Grove, Oakwood Lane, Barton.

PERCIVAL, Frank, Bombardier (CWGC) Private 757 158, 19th Canadian Infantry died 13th July 1917 aged 27. He was the son of Albert and Sarah Ann 115, East 23rd Street, Mount Hamilton, Ontario. In 1911 Frank, his parents and siblings were all living at Austin Cottage, Booths Hill, Lymm, Cheshire. On the 23rd February 1913 Frank and his brother left Liverpool bound for St John New Brunswick, Canada , both classed as farmers. I have been unable to find when their parents went to Canada. On the 3rd July 1932 his mother Sarah Ann and his brother, Arthur (Lithographer) arrived at Liverpool on ship Laurentic from Montreal and they gave the address of 18 Sandy Lane, Weaverham, Cheshire. On the 2nd September 1932 his mother, Sarah Ann, left 18, Sandy Lane, Weaverham and returned to Canada, alone, on the same ship. The 23rd June 1926 his brother Arthur (still a Lithographer) and his wife, Ethel, left 44, Lingard Street, Reddish, near Stockport, left Liverpool bound for Canada. It appears that all the family lived in Canada. Native of Cheshire. He is at rest in Chocques Military Cemetery, France

BUCKLEY, John, Private, killed in action 9th June 1917 aged 19. Son of John and Hannah of Acton Bridge, Cheshire. Commemorated on his parents memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard, Weaverham, Cheshire
BUCKLEY, George Henry, Private 3756 9th Reinforcement 20th Battalion, Australian Infantry killed in action in France on the 5th August 1916. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France. He enlisted along with his brother, Arthur on the 29th October 1915 at Casula, New South Wales aged 23 years and 1 month. he gave his father, William of 36, Highfield, Weaverham as his next of kin. His address in New South Wales was c/o Mrs M Rankin, "Balgowie" Oswell Street, Campsie and he was employed as a farm labourer. He embarked Sydney, N.S.W. on ship H.M.A.T. A54 "Runic" on the 20th January 1916 bound for Alexandria. the 26th February 1916 he embarked Alexandria on the same ship "Runic" for Zeitoun arriving the same day and taken on strength of the 20th Battalion at Moascar on the 13th March 1916. He embarked Alexandria bound for France on the 18th March 1916 on H.M.T. "Ingoma" and disembarked at Marseilles on the 24th March 1916. His last payment in the field was on the 7th July 1916. On the 5th August 1916 he was reported wounded in action, later wounded and missing. On the 29th September 1917 in the field an Court of Enquiry was held by the Commanding Officer of the 20th Battalion where is was stated that he was killed in action. No burial.
His brother Arthur, Private 3755 was wounded several times both severely in France, The first was in shot in the back on the 4th August 1916 and was treated in the field and then in England and was later returned to his regiment fit for war service, The last time he was shot in the left are near his elbow fracturing his ulna on the 3rd May 1917, treated in the field and England. He was medical discharged and he returned to New South Wales. He gave his wife Frances E Buckley of 54 Bottenberg Road, Fosse Road Leicester as his next of kin.

He was the son of William and Elizabeth Burgess, of Maldwyn Cottage, Beach Grove, Chester Road, Hartford. He is at rest in St Mary's Churchyard, Weaverham, Cheshire.

He was born in the registration district of Northwich Cheshire in 1889 and was the son of Thomas and Ellen, and he was the husband of Ethel nee Bell of School Lane, Sandiway, Cheshire. he is at rest in Bouzincourt Communal cemetery Extension, Somme, France

His army record shows that he was working on at Byn Bank Farm, Sandiway near Weaverham as a horse driver, He enlisted at Northwich Cheshire aged 23, on the 15th November 1915 and was posted to France on the 7th April 1916 and died on the 11th July 1916

FOWLES FRED. Private, 16750, 6th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, (West Riding) formerly 6791 Dragoons, died 1st November 1915. Born in Weaverham, Northwich son of Hannah and Edward and in 1911 hew employed as telegraph messenger. At rest in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Some notes from what remains of his army records. He joined up on the 31st August 1914 aged 19 at Newport Monmouthshire., occupation given as a groom. and lived with his father at the Toll Bary, Oakmere, Northwick, his late mother was called Hannah. He joined the 3rd Reserve Cavalry as Private 6791. Transferred to the 3rd West Riding Regiment as private 16730, Posted on the 28th August 1915 to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. Taken ill while on active service, transferred to a hospital in Malta and died on the 1st November 1915 of Paratyphoid, perforation and general peritonitis.
GREGORY, Arthur Private 14767 1st Cheshire Regiment died 3rd October 1917 aged 28. He was the son of Allen and Mary of 14, Wilbram Road, Weaverham, Cheshire. He is at rest in Ridge Wood Military Cemetery, Belgium update, burnt
HOUGH Thomas, Private 31585, 2nd South Lancashire Regiment, formerly 1452 Cheshire Yeomanry killed in action 7th August 1917 aged 24 Born at Acton, Cheshire and was the son of William and Annie. He is at rest in Belgian Battery Corner Cemetery, Belgium. His army record show that he enlisted on the 9th November 1914 and was residing with his parents and sister at Wall Hill Farm, Acton near Northwich. He embarked Southampton on the 20th September 1916 arrived in Rouen the next day and later he joined the 2nd Lancashire Regiment. His sister, Mable Alice Hough received his medals.

His brother Private 45802 William George joined the Cheshire Regiment and was demobilised in 1920. Thomas is at rest in Nieupoort Communal Cemetery, Belgium.

POWELL, John Alick, Private (Drummer)13145, 1st Cheshire Regiment died of wounds on the 14th April 1917. 1911 census shows John Arthur born in 1896 living with his parents John Thomas and Louisa nee Shallcross at Church Street, Weaverham. He was employed as a Glue Packer. His army records shows that he joined up on the 1st September 1914 aged 19 years and 10 months as Alick Powell and he was living with his parents and siblings at 4, Woodward Street, Weaverham and he was then employed as a labourer. Some of his record names him as John A Powell. On the 14th April 1917 he was shot in the neck and hands and he died of his wounds on the same day at No18 Casualty Clearing Station. At rest in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.
PRICE, Thomas Ernest, Private 352558, 2/9th Manchester regiment died 9th October 1917. Native of Sandiway, Northwich, Cheshire and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
RAMSDEN, Ralph, Private 22227, No1 Coy 20th Service Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment died 30th July 1916. Born at Hartford near Weaverham, Cheshire and he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France. His army record shows that he joined up at the age of 21 and he was living with his wife, Francis Annie at Daleford Lane, Sandiway, Northwich, Cheshire and his parents, Ralph and Fanny were living at Coalyard Cottage, Chester Road, Hartford, Northwich, Cheshire. He was in France for the 7th November 1915 to his death.

WILKINSON, Harry, Private 14754, 1/4th Cheshire Regiment, (22nd Foot) fell in action in France 14th October 1918 aged 24. Son of William and Martha Ann of Acton Cliff, Northwich, Cheshire. He joined up on the 7th September 1916 aged 20 and 9 months. On the 7th July 1916 he received a gun shot wound to a finger. Fought in France from the 19th December 1915 to his death 14th October 1918. Commemorated on his parents memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard. At rest in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.

His father served his country in the Great War
He first enlisted on the 1st September 1914 aged 29 and 1 month into the South Lancashire Regiment as private 13239 but was struck off because he did not join up at the depot and was now serving with the Cheshire Regiment. On the 5th June 1915 he joined up at Aldershot aged 29 years 9 months and 17 days in to the Cheshire Regiment as Private 13146. His father, Henry Edward of Station Road, Weaverham was his next of kin. After he had completed his training he was posted to Iraq on the 15th October 1916 from Devonport, disembarking at Basra on the 22nd November 1916. where he joined the 1/8th Cheshire's. He was wounded in action receiving a shrapnel wound to his right arm on the 20th May 1916. and was treated at 77th Field Ambulance, same day, 20th, he was transferred to 30th Casualty Clearing Station. 25th May 1916 transferred to 1st Australian General Hospital. 4th June 1916 sent to 2nd Convalescent Camp the next day he was re-admitted into 1st Australian General Hospital, then transferred on the 27th June 1916 to 6th General Hospital. 9th July 1916 invalided to England on Hospital Ship, St Andrew and admitted into 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester on the 14th July 1916. He was discharged from hospital to sick leave on the 11th August 1916. He returned to Iraq some time later. While there he was admitted in to 23rd British Stationary Hospital, Baghdad several time suffering from diarrhoea.
He left Iraq on the 7th March 1919 bound for England and demobilisation. He was demobilized with the rank of corporal at Shrewsbury on the 12th May 1919 to his home, Victoria Villas, Weaverham. He was born on the 31st July 1885 to Henry Edward and Sophia.

Some notes from what remains of his army records. He first joined up on the 27th October 1907 at Chester aged 22 and 8 months, occupation, surveyor and draughtsman. On the 26th September 1909 he was discharged for the army on the termination of his firth period on engagement. He re-joined on the 30th May 1910 for a furthur period of 10 years. Being transferred to the army reserve on the 24th December 1912. He was mobilized on the 6th August 1914 at Gosport and posted to 42nd Company, Royal Engineers. He embarked for France on the 5th December 1914. On the 17th December 1918 he was admitted to 51 Casualty Clearing Station, France. No record could be found as to why he was in the C.C.S. While at the front he was promoted to 2nd Corporal while serving with 5th Field Company on the 26th December 1916, he reverts back to Lance Corporal, permanent, on the 3rd March 1917. He was demobilized at Chatham on the 10th July 1919 to his home in Weaverham.

He joined up aged 19 and 5 months on the 5th September 1915. Lived at Farraday Road, Winnington, occupation, labourer. His father was his next of kin, of the same address. He embarked for France from Folkestone on the 18th July 1915. Promoted to Lance Corporal in the field on the 29th May 1915 and was taken ill with rheumatic fever at the front on the 3rd September 1915. Treated at 9th Casualty Clearing Station, later at 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship, Anglia on the 8th September 1915 where he was admitted to 1/5th Northern General Hospital. Whilst in the hospital he had trouble with his heart following rheumatic fever which he had in France. He was transferred Kinghton V.A.D. Hospital, Evington, Leicester on the 5th January 1916 suffering from Rheumatic and Mycosis . Whilts he was there he had a attack of influenza after which he heart commenced to fail. He died in the hospital of Mitral and Aortic Stenosis , as recorded in his notes.

In 1911 he was living at Mayfole Inn, Acton Bridge, Northwich, near Weaverham with his widowed mother Ada Buckley, aged 45, and his siblings . Some notes from his army records. He joined up aged 18 and 6 months on the 15th May 1916, occupation, stockman. On the 7th September 1916 he embarked on vessel Clan McGillivray and disembarked at Plymouth on the 2nd November 1916. On the 4th February 1917 he embarked Folkestone on vessel, Invicta for France disembarking the same day. He then marched also the same day into 3rd Australian Divisional Base Depot, at Etaples, joining his unit in the field on the 6th February 1917, He went sick with gastritis and admitted to 11th Field Ambulance on the 3rd March 1917 re-joining his unit fit for service on the 11th March 1917. On the 9th June 1917 he was killed in action in Belgium and buried few days later.

Fought in France from the 19th December 1915 to his death 14th October 1918. Commemorated on his parents memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard. At rest in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
