Thomas J HILL

HILL, Thomas J (served as T J JONES) Private 12413, 16th Lancashire Fusiliers died 11th March 1920. (Medal card, Ancestry) Served in France, 23rd November 1915, discharged 6th December 1918. At rest in Wolverhampton Cemetery, Staffordshire. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 26th November 1914 at Salford, as Thomas Jones aged 28, chemical labourer and lived at 11, Westbury Street, Wolverhampton. He was born at Blakenhall, Staffordshire. The battalion embarked for France in November 1915. On the 29th on December 1915 he joined the Trench Mortar School in the field and joined the 108 Trench Mortar Battery on the 4th January 1916.. On the 9th April 1916 he was posted to 96/1st Trench Mortar Battery. On the 16th July 1916 he was attached to 17th King\'s Liverpool Regiment and on the 1st August 1916 he was shot and wounded in his foot and was treated at No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen. The 25th August 1916 he joined the 16th Lancashire Fusiliers for duty from 23rd Infantry Base Depot, having been discharged from hospital fit for war service to the Base depot. 31st August 1916 he was again with the School of Mortars and then posted to 96 Trench Mortar Battery. He was wounded again in the back and face on the 29th September 1918 and he was treated at 47, Casualty Clearing Station, the at No 3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship, Guildford on the 1st October 1918 and was admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol on the 2nd. He was discharged from the hospital 6th December 1918. Throughout his ordeal he was suffering from a lung disease which started June 1918 in France, but when he was in hospital in Bristol he had trouble in breathing. It was discovered the he had Tuberculosis of Lung. On the 8th December 1918 he had a medical board at the hospital in Bristol and was discharged physically unfit.
