BIRD Family. Thomas, aged 50, Clara, his wife, aged 49, and Ronald Kenneth, their son aged 9. all died through enemy action on the 21st November 1940 at their home, 39, Spring vale Street, Willenhall except Ronald who was taken to hospital and he died the same day at the Royal Hospital, Wolverhampton . They are at rest in Bentley Cemetery, Willenhall, Staffordshire "Their death was sudden, the shock severe, we did not know their end was near only those who have lost can tell. The pain of parting without a farewell"
Thomas , the father, twice enlisted into the army and on both occasions was discharged medically unfit, ailment not given. The following are some notes from both of his army record. On both occasions he gave his next of kin as his mother Angelina, and brothers Albert and Walter of 42. High Street, Portobello, Willenhall, Staffordshire. His first enlistment was on the 6th January 1915 aged 22, occupation mechanic. He was posted the same day as Private 16796, Royal Fusiliers to the regimental depot. On the 18th January 1915 he was discharged on medical grounds. On the 10th April 1915 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps at Aldershot as private 11960 aged 28. He was discharged on the 30th April 1915.
Auth: I take my hat off to him, at least he tried to serve his country, only to be killed with his family in 1940 through enemy action.
