The 16th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers was formed at Llandudno in November 1914 by
Colonel Thomas Alured WYNNE-EDWARDS, V.D. It served in France and Belgium 1915-1918. On November 17, 1918 being the first British unit to enter the village of Obreches after the evacuation by the Germans. It was presented with a flag by the commune. This flag together with the King's Colour were deposited in this cathedral in June 1919 when the Battalion was disbanded.
Thomas Alured WYNNE-EDWARDS 1855-1925
He was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Copner Wynne-Edwards and Maria, nee Gibson and husband of Isabel Gertrude Parry nee Jones of Plas Nantglyn, Denbigh. He died on the 29th November 1925 at Pas Nantglyn, Denbighshire. He was an Agricultural Engineer and Lesser Squire of Nantglyn, politician and soldier. On the 4th December 1880 he played rugby as halfback for the recently formed Denbigh Rugby Club who played Chester at the Howell's school field, Denbigh. He was still playing rugby on the 14th January 1881. His rank in the army was now Captain
In 1900 he was surveyor involved in the widening the west end of High Street and High Gate at Denbigh
In 1911 his occupation was Land Agent and was living with his wife at Plas Nantglyn, Denbigh

London Gazette, 18th September 1916. Training Reserve. The undermentioned Commanding Officers are transferred to Training Reserve Battalion (which are many including Lt Col T.A. Wynne- Edwards) 1st September 1916
London Gazette dated 23rd April 1918. Infantry Training Reserve. Temp, Lt Col (Col retired T.F.) relinquished he temp commission an vacating command of a battalion, 28th February 1918
