ohn Holt Elkes STUBBS, M.D. F.R.C.S. Surgeon to the 91st Foot. Born at Glasgow 12th January 1818 and died at Rhyl, Denbighshire 21st December 1857
London Gazette. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the Forces on the 2nd October 1840

He was stationed in Cork with the Medical Department 2nd October 1841
He was travelling onboard the ill fated, Her Majesty's Transport Abercrombie Robinson with the 91st Regiment and other regiments, women, children, and the Naval crew when it was hit by a storm near Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope. On the morning of the 28th August 1842 the ship drifted and ran aground on the salt Water Beach, Cape Town. On board were 700 souls. and no one was lost, by the afternoon the ship was abandoned . At the same time, ships, Waterloo, Convict ship, John Bagshaw, the Ghika, the Fairfield, the Henry Hoyle, the Reform and a cutter, all fell victim of the storm with the loss of life. More so on the convict ship, when most her passengers would have been shackled together, they never stood a chance of being freed, poor souls
He received his medical training at Manchester Royal Infirmary and served in the Army. he was the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) at the House of Recovery, Manchester before settling in St Asaph. In 1853 he wrote a book about Cholera
