Steam Merchant Ship RUNO (Hull)

At 00.22 and 00.24 hours on 11 Apr, 1943, U-593 fired four single torpedoes at two ships in a small convoy consisting of four steamers and three escorts about 60 miles northeast of Bardia and observed a hit amidships on the first ship which broke in two and sank and saw a hit on the second. However, the only ship hit was the Runo (Master C.H. Tully). 16 crew members were lost. The master, 15 crew members and five gunners were rescued and landed at Alexandria on 13 April.

BURSELL, Harry, Chief Steward died aged 32. Son of Henry and Ellen Bursell; husband of Edith Mary Bursell, of 10, Henry's Terrace, Rodney Street, Kingston upon Hull. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

COLE, Leslie Albert Edward, Fireman Trimmer died aged 35. He resided at 28, Helmsley Grove, Derringham Bank, Kingston upon Hull. He was the son of Edward John and Fanny of 7, Kingscross Terrace, Bean Street, Hull and husband of Nora May nee Young. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

CURRIE, Donald Stuart, Assistant Cook, died aged 18. Son of Herbert Jackson and Agnes Currie, of Liverpool. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

EDWARDS, Gilbert Martin, Boatswain (Bosun) died aged 42. He was the husband of Gertrude Evelyn of 15a Cambridge Street, Kingston upon Hull. He was the son of George William and Mary Alice of 2, Redbourne Terrace, Redbourne Street, Hull. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

EGLIN, Frank, Chief Officer died aged 38. He was the husband of Gladys of 7, Bilton Grove, Preston Road, Kingston upon Hull. He was the son of John and Sarah of 279, Market Street, Shawforth, near Rochdale, Lancashire. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

GIBBONS, Thomas, Able Seaman died aged 67. He was the son of Stephen and Mary of Kingston upon Hull who in 1911 were residing at 12, Coronation Street, Maryport. In the 1901 census Thomas was in Royal Naval Hospital, Alverstoke, Hampshire, ill, aged 21, a Stoker in the Royal Navy. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

GORDON, Eric, Cook, died aged 20. He was the son of Edward Oglivie and Jane Gordon of 210, Albert Avenue, Kingston upon Hull. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

HARGREAVES, Raymond Allan, First Radio Officer died aged 33. Husband of Lucy of 8, Gwendor Avenue, Crampsall, Manchester. He was the son of James Frederick Raymond and Annie of 11, Dales Avenue, Whitefield, Radcliffe, Lancashire. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. His brother, Pilot Officer 42502, Frederic Norman of 92 squadron Royal Air Force of 3, Westbourne Avenue, Whitfield, died 11th September 1940 aged 20. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Enfield Green, near Egham, Surrey. Their father who was also residing at 3, Westbourne Avenue, Whitefield, died 27th October 1923.
