AKED Robert Basil Cautley (M.C.) Lieutenant 2/5th North Staffordshire Regiment died 21st March 1918 aged 20. Son of Henry Edward and Eleanor Aked, of "Mablethorpe", Leeds Rd., Harrogate, Yorks. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
ALLEN, R (It may be the following) Corporal B/201547 Raymond ALLEN, 1/8th London Regiment, Post Office Rifles, formerly Private 072030 Mechanical Transport, Royal Army Service Corps, killed in action 27th April 1918. Born in Harrogate and enlisted at Doncaster, both in Yorkshire. Son of Edith Jane who was granted a war gratuity on the 2nd December 1918, revised on the 13th December 1919. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
BELL Donald Simpson. (VC) Second Lieutenant, 9th Yorkshire Regiment died 10th July 1916 aged 25. Former professional football player. Son of Smith and Annie Bell, of Western Flats, Queen's Road, Harrogate, husband of Rhoda Bell, of Wilmslow, Cheshire. At rest in Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France
Citation
An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 29740, dated 8th Sept., 1916, records the following:- "For most conspicuous bravery. During an attack a very heavy enfilade fire was opened on the attacking company by a hostile machine gun. 2nd Lt. Bell immediately, and on his own initiative, crept up a communication trench and then, followed by Corpl. Colwill and Pte. Batey, rushed across the open under very heavy fire and attacked the machine gun, shooting the firer with his revolver, and destroying gun and personnel with bombs. This very brave act saved many lives and ensured the success of the attack. Five days later this very gallant officer lost his life performing a very similar act of bravery.

Some notes from what remains of his army record.
He joined up on the 11th December 1915 aged 39 and 3 months, occupation, cab driver. He was the husband of Ada Annie nee Wray who he married on the 24th January 1905 at Knaresborough, Yorkshire. They were living at 55 Tower Street, Harrogate with their two children. Charles Edward, born 9th July 1907 and Eliza Lily born 22nd August 1909, both in Harrogate. In 1911 he and his family were still living at 55 Tower Street, After he had completed his training he was posted to France on the 30th November 1916, marched into 37th Infantry Brigade Depot at Etaples. On the 14th December 1916 he was posted to the 13th East Yorkshire Regiment. While at the front he was wounded in action on the 23rd September 1918 and the following day died gunshot wounds to his buttocks and left leg. He was laid to rest at Thilloy Road British Cemetery, one and quarter miles south of Peronne, France.
BURTON Roland. Private 44792, 7th Lincolnshire Regiment died 22nd March 1918 aged 19. Son of Rachel Burton, of 27, Cheltenham Crescent, Harrogate, and the late Elliott Burton. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
CARRICK Robert Lawson. Sergeant 24062, 13th Canadian Infantry died of wounds 26th April 1915 aged 29 on No 16 Ambulance Train, Rouen. Son of Robert Lawson Carrick and Mary Jane Carrick, of 55, Drake Street, Cote St. Paul, Montreal. He was born on the 2nd August 1886 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. He joined up aged 29 on the 23rd September 1914, occupation, carpenter. He previously served 4 years with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. In 1901 aged 15 he was living with his parents and siblings at 6 Cheltenahm Toad, Harrogate. Employed as an errand boy. On the 26th April 1907 he embarked from Liverpool, England bound for Quebec, Canada on ship, Virginian. At rest in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, France.

Boy Class 1 still at Ganges, leaving on the 25th March 1913. On the 26th March 1913 still Boy Clas 1 now on HMS Edgar, HMS Noctine from 5th August 1913 to 15th September 1913. Now on HMS Queen Mary as of the 16th March 1913. The 30th April 1914 now Ordinary Seaman, 7th January 1915, Able Seaman still on the Queen Mary. He joined on the 15th July 1914 gave his occupation as motor engineer. He was post to the 6th Battalion at Broadmeadows, Victoria, Australia. His place of birth given by him was Ohio, U.S.A. and his next of kin his mother, Annie Elizabeth Colls of Spa Hydro, Harrogate, Yorkshire. He had previously served for three and half years as Sergeant with the Cambridge University Corps, attached to Cambridge Volunteers. Prior the that he was for 1 year a member of the Bakewell Rifle Club. After he had completed his training he embarked for England from Melbourne on the 19th October 1914 on H.M.A.T. A20 Hororata. Then from England to Alexandria, date not recorded.
On the 1st January 1915 he was promoted to Corporal in Egypt, then killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula 25th April 1915.

EDGECOMBE Arthur Wilfred. Midshipman, Royal Navy on H.M.S. Verulam Killed by a mine explosion off the island of Seiskari in the Gulf of Finland on the night between 3–4 September 1919, the ship sank. Death recorded 3rd September 1919, aged 18. Son of Wilfrid Edgecombe, M.D., and Jane Edgecombe, of 17, Victoria Avenue, Harrogate. Served 2 years in H.M.S. His widow Matilda Sutton, nee Lockley (born 1887) was granted a war gratuity on the 16th October 1918, revised on the 26th November 1919. ROTHERY James William Private G/13917, 1st East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) died 2nd June 1919 at Becketts Park Hospital, Leeds. He lived at 4 Montpelier Parade, Harrogate and his effects went to Hannah Haley, his mother, widow. Her maiden name was Ineson. He was born on the 5th September 1876, baptised on the 26th November 1876 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Batley Carr, Yorkshire. In 1901 he was living with his parents Joseph and Hannah at 121 Cold Bath Road, Harrogate. In 1911, now aged 32 he was living with his mother, now a widow at 7 St Mary's Walk, Harrogate, occupation, professional cricketer for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. At rest in Harlow Hill Cemetery, Harrogate, Yorkshire.

He joined up on the 8th December 1915 aged 39 and was posted to the Royal Fusiliers as Private 5843. He was living with his parents at 4 Montpellier Parade, Harrogate. After he had completed his training he was posted to France on the 2nd April 1917. On the 29th April 1917 he was transferred to B Company, The Buffs as private 13917. On the 25th May 1917 he was wounded in action, receiving a gunshot wound to he left arm resulting in many compound fractures. On the same day he was treated at No18 Field Ambulance, then No 58 Casualty Clearing Station, and No 21 Ambulance Train where the next day, 29th he was admitted into No 13 General Hospital, Boulogne. 1st June 1917 he was transferred to England on Hospital Ship, St David and was admitted into Suffolk Hospital, Ampton Hall, Bury St Edmunds the next day 2nd. He was discharged from hospital on the 8th August 1917. No record was given as to what happened to him after being discharged until the 6th September 1917 when he was admitted into the East Leeds War Hospital still with the same wounds. On the 4th July 1918 he was discharged. Date not known he was admitted into 2nd Northern General Hospital, Leeds where he died from compound fractures and septicaemia of the wound 2nd June 1919.

Boat No 19 died at sea of Gibraltar 25th April 1918. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lupton and Mrs. Shaw, of 1, Belmont Rd., Harrogate, Yorks. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
HMTB 88,89,90, built by Yarrow 1894/5, 112 tons TB88,89, 100 tons TB90, Armed with 3 x 3 pounder guns and 3 x 14 inch torpedos. All served at Gibralter 1914-1918, TB88,89 sold 1919, TB90 capsized off Gibralter 25th April 1918.

Brother of Mrs. Sarah Ann Baker, nee Topham, of 51, Belford Row, Lower Street, Harrogate. Yorkshire. She was granted a war gratuity on the 21st September 1917, revised on the 14th November 1919. She was the daughter of Joseph and Alice. At rest in Heninel-Croisilles Road Cemetery, France.

He joined up on the 28th March 1911 aged 17 and 5 months, occupation, cabinet maker and he lived at 15 Strawberry Dale Avenue, Harrogate. Embodied service on the 5th August 1915 as private. Promoted to Lance Corporal on the 11th February 1916 and Corporal on the 21st March 1916. On the 28th March 1916 he re-engaged for a period of 4 years. After he had completed his training he embarked from Southampton on the 5th January 1917, disembarking at Havre the next day. While at the front he was wounded by shrapnel to his chin, left arm and buttocks on the 3rd May 1917. After being treated at the front by various medical facilities he was admitted to 8th General Hospital, Rouen. From there he was invalided to Southampton on Hospital Ship, Grantully Ole. He was admitted into Western General Hospital, Manchester on the 17th May 1917 and discharged fit for war service on the 21st August 1917. At the front he was promoted to Lance Sergeant on the 14th December 1917 and was killed in action on the 11th October 1918.
Three of his brothers served in the army in the Great War.
William Gordon Topham. Company Sergeant Major 7757058, Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Frederick Walter Topham. Private 8138 Dorset Regiment. He was living with his mother, Jane at 37 Mannville Terrace, Bradford in 1916 and Christopher who fell in 1917. The other two survived the war.
TOPHAM Christopher. Company Sergeant Major 200156, B Company, 1/5th West Yorkshire Regiment died 9th October 1917 aged 30. Son of Thomas William and Jane Topham, of Harrogate. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

He was posted as private 1388 to the West Yorkshire Regiment. No records for the Great War survived the blitz in WW2

He was married on the 16th April 1916 to Margery Cuckson who was 21 and lived at 1 Princes Villa Road, Harrogate. He was aged 20, hairdresser and lived at Durrington Mill, son of William. At rest in Marfaux British Cemetery, France.
WASLING Richard John. Private 36293, 12th Durham Light Infantry killed in action 27th October 1918 aged 21. Son of Elizabeth Smith, of Lamwath House, 10, Cheltenham Parade, Harrogate. At rest in Tezze British Cemetery, Italy.
WEBSTER George Sydney. Private 105715, 1st King's Liverpool Regiment killed in action 29th September 1918. Born at Law Laith, lived in Harrogate, both in Yorkshire. His widow Ann E was granted a war gratuity on the 22nd February 1919, revised on the 5th December 1919. At rest in Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery, France.
YEATES Olive. Born 24th September 1899, baptised at St Peter's Harrogate on the 1st October 1899. Daughter of George William and Miriam nee Wlker, of 42, Unity Grove, Harrogate. She was killed at the Barnbow Shell Factory, No 1. National Filling Factory, Crossgates, Leeds who lost their lives in the explosion 5th December 1916 aged 17.
