CORRY Robert John. Rifleman 9877, Royal Irish Rifles Depot. Died 17th May 1917. He is at rest on Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland. Some notes from his army records. He first joined the army on the 3rd June 1911 as Private 6396, 4th Royal Irish Rifles (Special Reserve) aged 17 years and 6 months. He was employed as a van driver and he lived with his parents, David and Margaret at 42A, Church Street, Newtownards. He may have served in Malta as there is one small medical reference to him as "as being fit for service in Malta" He discharged himself from the reserve in December 1911 to join the "Regular" army. On the 1st January 1912 he rejoined aged 18 and 1 months and joined the 2nd Royal Irish Rifles at Dover as private 9877. On the 15th August 1914 he was posted to join his regiment in France. In France he was sent to D Company. On the 20th September 1914 he was fighting in the battle for Aisne when he was shot in the right arm. He received a compound fracture to his humerus, shattering the bone at Vailly-sur-Aisne . On the 21st he was admitted from a medical aid post to 4th General Hospital, Versailles, France and on the 26th he was sent to England on Hospital Ship, Asturias. No record as to the name of the hospital he was admitted into but he had his medical board for his discharge at 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham. No doubt that was the hospital he was admitted into from France. On the 22nd July 1915 he was discharged from the army aged 21 to his home at 12, Windmill Row, Newtownard as "No longer physically fit for war service". His parents at some stage moved to 96 East Street, Newtownards, prior to him leaving the army.
On the 13th October 1915 he married Miss Elizabeth Greham at Newtownards and then he enlisted again on the 18th October 1916 at Armagh, Ireland. He was posted to the depot of the Royal Irish Rifles as private 24894. He had written down that he had previously served as Private 9877, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles and that he was discharged unfit. Whilst at the depot he reported sick and ended up in the Military Hospital, Belfast where he was diagnosed as suffering from Tubercle of Lung. It started about twelve months prior in Newtownards and was not caused by previous was service He was discharged from the army after serving 77 days on the 29th January 1916. At the time of his death in 1917 he wife wrote to the regiment informing them of his death and the address she gave was 3, Mary Street, Newtownards.
