Robert Hugh MARTIN. Private, 75965, 1st/1st Derbyshire Yeomanry. He died at St Elmo Hospital, Valetta after surviving a complex heart operation by Sir Charles Ballance and Dr Marguerite White, to have a rifle bullet removed from his right ventricle with forceps , but sadly died from infection as antibiotics had not been invented 14th March 1918, aged 21 years. He was the first person in the world to have a heart operation. The son of Harry and Jeanetta Martin, of Glenbourne, Totley Rise, Sheffield.
