McKEAND Robert George. Private R4/068962 Royal Army Service Corps, died 15th February 1920 aged 42. He was the husband of Sarah Ann, nee Burton and in 1911 he was living at Castle Hill, Alton, Staffordshire occupation, waggoner. He may have been the son George and Bessie, from Liverpool. He is at rest in St Peters extended churchyard, Alton, Staffordshire. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 18th May 1915 at Stoke-on-Trent. He was born at Liverpool, Lancashire by occupation was a horseman. He was living with his wife Sarah Anne, nee Burton who he married as Robert George, on the 28th December 1907 in a civil marriage at Cheadle, Staffordshire, he was living at High Street, Alton, Staffordshire after their wedding. On the 6th May 1916 he embarked Southampton on vessel H T Missouri bound for Alexandria where he disembarked on the 24th May 1916. On the 26th he was taken on strength of the 43rd Remount Squadron at Abyssinia, Cairo. He was admitted to military Hospital at Cairo with gonorrhoea on the 19th September 1916 and was discharged fit for war service on the 22nd November 1916. and was posted to the 47th Remount Squadron. He left Alexandria on the 30th November 1916 for Salonika and disembarked on the 6th December 1916 and was posted to the 43rs Remount. On the 18th August 1919 he was discharged from the army and transferred to Class Z. At some stage he received a server injury to he spine, because the is reference to him being a 100% paraplegia. He was awarded a pension also for his wife and one child, adopted. The pension expired on his death. His wife applied for a pension and it was approved on the 16th December 1921 The adopted child was called James Plant Alcock born, 30th August 1908.
