Over the course of the war, Reggiane worked tirelessly to improve the performance of their fighters. Fitting a Daimler-Benz DB601A inverted V-12 sunstantially revised the fighter's outward appearance. Designated as the RE 2001 Ariete, performance improvement could only be considered as modest. Roberto Longhi believed that the airframe still had a great deal of potential and proved this by installing a more powerful DB605A engine, Thus was born the outstanding RE 2005 Sagittario. Indeed, performance inproved dramatically, with a top speed of 421 mph being obtained at an altitude of 7,000 meters. Unfortunately, the decision to place the fighter into production was not made until February of 1943. Only a handfull were produced before the Armistice with the Allies was signed. The aircraft shown was the 10th to come off of the production line. http://archive.li/w7hTO#selection-873.25-878.0
