Red Paw Memorial, at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire

Dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives whilst serving with the Army Dog Unit Northern Ireland

CRIDDLE, Bryan (BEM) Corporal 23547930,Royal Army Veterinary Corps, died 22nd July 1973 aged 34. Buried in Blockley, Gloucestershire ( Died four days after being injured in land mine attack on British Army foot patrol, near Clogher, CountyTyron. He was attached to the Royal Tank Regiment when he was killed, He had been awarded the BEM for his service in Ulster, His dog survived the Blast, he was from Blockley in Gloucestershire.

ORTON, Malcolm Robert Ernest, Sapper 24269209, Royal Engineers, died by accident 17th September 1973 aged 24. Buried in Rycroft Cemetery and Crematorium, Coalpool Lane, Walsall, Staffs

HAMPSON, Peter, Lance Corporal 24271957, Parachute Regiment died 24th December 1981 aged 25

BROWN, David Brian (QGM) Corporal, Ulster defence Corps, died 28th May 1986 aged 37. Buried in Spa, Ballynahinch, County Down, Northern Ireland ( He was killed along with his search dog by a bomb left in a garage. He was awarded a posthumous Queens Gallantry Medal)

HAYES, Derek, Corporal 24463277, Royal Pioneer Corps died 21st May 1988 aged 28. Buried in Newport Cemetery, Lincoln, Lincolnshire ( Was killed along with his dog in a terrorist booby-trap bomb at Castleblayney Road, Crossmaglen. He went forward to investigate a box, partly hidden in a ditch, and on doing so the bomb detonated. Corporal Hayes was buried with the ashes of his dog.)


O'NEILL, Terence Gavin, Corporal 24139535, Royal Regiment Fusiliers, died 25th May 1991 aged 44. Buried in Alnwick Cemetery, Northumberland, (Killed by a home made grenade thrown over the wall of North Howard Street Army base, West Belfast. He was serving as a dog-handler and was feeding his Labrador at the time. He had served 22 years and was due to retire from the army in 6 months.
